Authors spend many hours in a fantasy world of our own. Imagining worlds and characters from our imagination and making those come to life through our stories. Those stories and characters can be completely original or may be known to us in the form of faerie tales. When I created my first YA fantasy faerie tale trilogy I took the bare bones of the original stories and characters and fleshed them out. I also introduced new ones in my reimagining. What came from my writing was very different to that I first envisioned. I wrote a host of characters that would cross over into other faerie tales, told with a twist or an original spin. Faerie tales never grow old.
I would like to introduce you to my imaginary friends. The cast of characters that have made their appearance in A Dark Faerie Tale. I will try not to introduce spoilers for those who haven’t read the books. I will start with the first book in the trilogy.
Kingdom of Ice: A Dark Faerie Tale Book 1
Princess Khione
Princess Khione is the daughter and only child of the late King Eldwin and Queen Eleanor of Turia. She is described as tall, beautiful with long black hair that accentuated her delicate and flawless pale skin, soulful grey eyes framed with long black lashes, and a full cupid’s bow mouth. Khione is cheerful, warm-hearted and has a kind nature, unlike her cold uncaring mother.
Queen Eleanor imprisons her daughter for four years, in the North Tower of Ruhan Castle from the age of thirteen, as she is jealous of her beauty and popularity. Khione is gifted with the ability to understand the language of all animals, and they understand her. When her mother plots to murder her with the help of her huntsman she escapes into the forbidden forest, the home of the Fae. There she meets a family of elf brothers who will do anything it takes to keep her safe.
Gerda
Gerda is the daughter of Agnes, Khione’s nursemaid. She is described as a short, pretty girl with long red hair and beautiful emerald green eyes. Gerda is feisty, loyal, tenacious and loves deeply. Khione and Gerda become best friends.
When she imprisons Khione, Queen Eleanor banishes Gerda and her mother from the lands of Turia. They start a new life in Bracan, in the nearby Kingdom of Agraunia. Where they share a small garret room with Agnes’s widowed mother, Matilda. Gerda befriends her neighbour’s son, Kai, who is an apprentice to a Blacksmith. Their close friendship eventually blossoms into love. Their short-lived happiness comes to a halt with Kai’s cold, distance demeanour. Kai then disappears after being seen with a strange woman in white.
The Snow Queen
The strange woman in white aka, the Snow Queen, lives in a palace of ice in the frozen Korah Valley near the Kingdom of Narekith. The Snow Queen is described as tall with long silver-white hair, piercing blue eyes and delicate beauty. She is distant, self-centred and melancholic. The Snow Queen possesses magic and has lived alone in her palace for many years. There are many rumours circulating about her origins, many say she is either a witch or Fae.

Princess Khione craves her vain and heartless mother’s love. After her beloved father dies, she despairs at ever finding love and happiness again. Forced to flee into the Forsaken Forest, the home of the Fae, Khione finds something she could have never imagined.

Their short-lived happiness comes to a halt with Kai’s cold, distance demeanour. After he disappears after being seen with a strange woman in white, rumours persist that he is dead. Only Gerda knows he is still alive. The place he touched deepest in her heart makes it hard for her to accept any other truth but her instincts scream at her that he is in danger. With no one willing to help, Gerda sets out alone to rescue him, unaware of the dangers outside of her sheltered life as the nursemaid’s daughter.
Kingdom of Ice, book 1 of A Dark Faerie Tale, is a blended retelling of Snow White, the Snow Queen and other fairy tales, with action/adventure and a magical touch of romance.
